Membership Matters

Welcome Eastern Area Chapter Vice-Presidents.  Our first Eastern Area Vice Presidents conference call will be Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

  • We will use the first conference call for introductions to each other and to Eastern Area Membership Committee goals.
  • In subsequent calls we will get to know each other better and discuss non-confidential membership issues.

Eastern Area Membership Goals Are:

  • Be a resource to address membership issues in a consistent manner that is compliant with Links’ governing documents.
  • Develop a list of questions and answers developed from discussions and questions raised during conference calls.

After each conference call, I will comb through and analyze governing documents to address issues and answer questions.

Interview with our National Vice President,
Link Glenda Newell-Harris
by Link Dianne S. Hardison
(Submitted for Publication February, 2011)

Link Glenda, thank you so much for this opportunity to interview you and share your wisdom with the Eastern Area Links.

  1. What is your philosophy vis-à-vis membership within The Links, Incorporated?
    • I encourage and promote Friendship First in all that we do within the Links, Incorporated. Because our organization was founded on friendship, we should reflect on this history as we work within our chapters. Secondly, we should remember to value the importance of a healthier membership. Scientific evidence indicates that friendships and social networks can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease, ward off depression and make us less susceptible to the ravage of old age”.* Friendship First, Sister Links.
  2. How would you describe your first months in office?
    • My first seven months in office have been busy and engaging. The days seem short sometimes, but I am fortunate to work with a very bright team of Vice Area Directors. The opportunity to connect and visit with Links sisters throughout all four areas has been an added bonus.
  3. I know Link Margot has set very ambitious goals for membership. What have you been able to accomplish to date and what remains on your list for 2011?
    • My list of goals is quite tall and I have many projects underway. Our Membership Committee is currently revising the Membership Manual and we are working on new forms for some of our membership categories to improve understanding of our guidelines and process. We encourage our Affiliate members to reconnect with chapters in their locales when possible and finally our committee hopes to further enhance our communication by using our upcoming area conferences to share important membership reminders
  4. What do you see as the top 3 challenges with respect to membership?
    • I look forward to:improved consistency in our documents;improved communication to our membership; andenhanced membership engagement.
  5. Where do you turn for your strength and renewal?
    • I am fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful friends and a very supportive family. As a Christian, I know that I can always lean on my faith during the good times and the more challenging times.
