The Eastern Area Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) committee strongly believes that mathematics is the gateway to success in all science, technology and engineering based fields.  Promoting mathematics achievement can open doors to all STEM careers and the lack of achievement in mathematics can close those doors.

With that in mind the STEM committee will fully utilize all available resources and technologies to aggressively raise awareness of the growing importance of STEM education with emphasis on mathematics.  Additionally, the STEM committee will provide educational activities, online resources and promote collaborative partnerships to assist chapters in their efforts to raise the level of STEM achievement in their local areas.

Goals:

1. Establish a link on the EA website, by December 2012, containing STEM opportunities for chapter to partner with the private sector. (Rhonda Crowder, Kimberly Newman-McCown, LaFrances Williams)

2. Use technology including webinars, conference calls and online videos to introduce chapters to STEM mentoring models, which promote achievement in mathematics. (Linda Hayden, Christine Darden, G. Nannette Ashe, LaFrances William, Rhonda Crowder)

3.      Establish a STEM initiative award for chapters.  Chapters who receive the award will report at the 2013 EA conference. (Linda Hayden, Christine Darden, G. Nannette Ashe, Kimberly Newman-McCown)

Conference Call/Webinars:  8pm Second Thursday night of each month beginning in October.
